The art collection within the LuEsther T. Mertz library at NYBG holds remarkable gems acquired over its long history. Much of the artwork is published in books, many pieces document species new to science, others have been featured in glorious exhibits; all provide inspiration to artists and authors. The history of acquisition at NYBG, and the potential for acquiring new artwork, demonstrates the supportive and symbiotic relationships between artists and botanical institutions. Scientific illustrator Bobbi Angell’s interaction with the collection yields insight into the resources and suggests guidelines for relationships between artists and libraries
